Edible Pulses
Chickpeas (garbanzos) and lentils fall under the category of edible pulses, or legumes. They are nutritious, satisfying and with the addition of herbs and spices, very tasty. They are also low in calories and cholesterol, high in fiber and abundant in amino-acids/plant protein.

The variety of uses for these edible pulses is only limited by your imagination. They can be eaten hot in soups or stews or cold in salads and, containing close to 25% protein, they make an ideal meat substitute for vegetarians who can find it hard to get sufficient protein in their diets. Other edible pulses include kidney, navy, string, lima, bush and soy beans and peanuts.

Eggs
In the old days we were told that eating eggs resulted in high cholesterol and that we should only eat the whites and maybe one or two whole eggs per week. Medical opinion on this has changed, and eating an egg a day is now not just considered safe, but encouraged.

Eggs provide us with protein and minerals. They are quite low in calories and low in the saturated, or "bad" fat we should avoid. Some studies have, in fact, shown that a regular consumption of eggs can increase our level of "good" cholesterol.

Veggie omelets combine two fat burning foods. They are quick and easy to make, and the vegetables, herbs and spices used can be changed around so they never become boring.

Some dietary studies have concluded that those who eat an egg for breakfast on a daily basis, along with or instead of toast and cereal, lose double the amount of weight as dieters who eat a carbohydrate based breakfast.

Nuts
Nuts are filling, nutritious and they contain monounsaturated fatty acids, also known as MUFA's. These healthy fats actually burn fat. This makes nuts a far better snack choice than a donut or candy bar and they are just as convenient to grab on the run or pack in your lunch box. Nuts can also be used as an ingredient in salads and stir-fries, or as a coating when baking fish.

We've all had it drummed into us that fats make us fat. You may be surprised to know that this is not necessarily the case, and that people who lack healthy fats in their diet are far more prone to piling on the pounds than those who regularly include moderate amounts of healthy fat. The key here is moderation. Eat a small handful of peanuts, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, almonds or walnuts every day and reap the health and weight loss benefits. Any more than a small handful though, and you will risk consuming too many calories.

Fish
Fish is an excellent source of protein and being rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, provides us with the good fats our bodies need to stay healthy. It is also low in calories and saturated fat. Any fish is good, providing it is grilled, baked or pan fried and not deep fried or smothered in heavy calorie-laden sauce. The best sources of omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, mackerel, trout and tuna.

Chicken and Turkey
For those who eat meat, white meat such as chicken and turkey is a better option than red meat. Chicken and turkey are excellent fat burning foods as they are high in protein with a low calorie count and carbohydrate level. High protein foods take longer to digest than foods with a low protein content, and more energy is expended in the process. It's important not to consume the chicken or turkey skin as these are high in fat. If you must have red meat, limit it to a small serving two to three times a week at most, and choose lean cuts or pork. As with other foods, the way it is cooked and ingredients added can increase the calorie count substantially.

Water
While not a food, water deserves to be included in this list. Water is essential for life. It keeps our metabolism ticking over, therefore it helps us burn body fat. It also helps flush toxins from our system and it is calorie free.

Foods that contain a lot of water impart a feeling of fullness, so we need less of the food to feel satisfied. Examples include cantaloupes, cucumbers, gourds, chard, papaya and watermelon.

When possible, choose whole foods over processed or refined food, using the fat burning foods above for reference. These fat burning foods contain lower levels of fat and sugar and less calories and carbohydrates than cakes, cookies, pizza and the like. Centering your diet around the former foods and limiting consumption of the latter will ulitmately result in a healthy weight loss.

Of course, you love your new little bundle of joy... but maybe not so much the extra pounds that came with him/her? Losing weight after a baby can be stressful, especially when it doesn't seem to be coming off, no matter what you've tried. Or maybe the weight was coming off in the beginning but it has slowed down or come to a complete halt? In this article, we are going to chat about some reasons you may not be losing your baby weight. Well, time's a wasting, so let's get started!

1. Sleeping? Are you getting enough sleep? I know, it's hard to get enough sleep when you have a baby who wakes you up at all hours of the night. Unfortunately though, it can affect your weight loss in a negative way. According to Madelyn Fernstrom, CNS (certified nutrition specialist), "Recent scientific studies show a strong relationship between sleep deprivation and weight gain". She also says "When our bodies aren't in a regular sleep pattern, hormones that regulate whether we feel full or hungry get out of whack, so all of our normal cues for eating are altered". Getting enough sleep means 7 to 8 hours every night.

2. Too Much or Too Little? Losing weight after a baby can depend largely on if you are eating the right amounts of food each day. If you are not eating enough, and/or skipping meals, your body will store fat and your metabolism will decrease. If you are eating too much, then you are of course going to gain weight with that as well. A good rule of thumb is to eat when you're hungry, but make sure it's healthy food. The best choices are foods that are higher in fiber and protein as both of these will help to keep you feeling full longer and keep your energy levels up. Keeping your energy levels up when you're a new mom is a great thing, right?

3. Strength. Are you exercising on a regular basis? Are you just doing cardio workouts? If so, adding strength-training is a good idea. Why, you ask? Well, strength-training is an excellent way to burn fat... even after your workout is done! This can be as easy as buying an inexpensive set of hand weights, a strength-training workout DVD and doing it in your very own living room! Note: Please make sure you have the "okay" from your doctor before beginning any type of exercise routine.

4. Is It Really Healthy? Do you pay attention to the ingredients that are in the food that you buy? Losing weight after a baby may depend on what you are eating. Sometimes foods that seem to be healthy are actually not. We've all seen the packages that say "low fat" or "low calorie", etc. but when you look at their ingredients, you may be surprised to see higher contents of other unhealthy ingredients, such as sugar (this includes glucose, fructose, corn syrup, etc.) or sodium, among others. For example, processed foods, such as frozen dinners, many times contain high amounts of sodium, calories, etc. It is best to stick to whole grain foods, fruits, vegetables and lean proteins (beans, legumes, lean beef, chicken, etc.).

5. Consistency is Key. Do you find that you are not consistent with your healthy eating and exercise plan? Being consistent is very important when trying to lose weight. If you are eating healthy and exercising regularly one week, and then not so much the next, that will definitely affect your weight loss in a negative way.

6. Weekends. I know firsthand that weekends can be tough for staying on track with your healthy eating and exercise. Many times, people tend to slack off on the weekends, or they have functions, eat out, birthday parties, etc. This will, of course, make losing weight after a baby very challenging if done on a regular basis. Try your hardest to choose healthier options, even if you have to plan ahead to do so.

7. Plateau. You may have simply hit a plateau, which means that you may just have to switch things up a bit. You may need to vary your workouts. When we become bored with our workouts, we may not be putting in as much effort with them anymore, or we may just stop doing them altogether. Either way, not a good thing, right? Try something totally different, maybe something new? As we chatted about before with the strength-training, you may just need to incorporate that in if you are only doing cardio workouts. There are also many different types of exercise classes you can take, such as dance classes, yoga, aerobics, Zumba, etc. There are also tons of different exercise DVDs out there, if you prefer working out at home. Maybe you have a favorite type of activity or sport you like to do? There are many different ways to get you up and moving! You may also just have to work harder in your workouts if you've hit a plateau (i.e. challenge yourself more).

Having a sufficient amount of muscle mass is important for everybody, no matter what your health or fat loss goals are. The reason why people associate muscle with health is because nine times of ten, those with enough muscle on their frame are in fact healthy. This is a fancy way of saying that you have broken down the muscle fibres due to resistance. The way you choose to provide resistance to your muscles is up to you. One thing to keep in mind is to keep increasing the intensity, if you want to keep stimulating new growth.

2 - Nutrition - You have probably heard all of this before, but it needs to be repeated: Nutrition is the most important factor when it comes to gaining muscle. After breaking down the muscle fibres with resistance training, they need to be fed quality nutrients in order to grow back bigger and stronger. Protein is by far the most important nutrient that you should concern yourself with. Aim for at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight each day. This may seem like a lot, but if you plan your meals out, it is quite easy. Add in a protein supplement if you feel you cannot eat enough food.

3 - Rest - This is the third, and least talked about, step in how to build muscle. Your muscles grow when you are resting, which means that you need adequate sleep each night if you want to see results. Now when I mention 'rest', this doesn't just relate to actual sleep. The more that you rest a muscle (and feed it), the quicker it will rebuild. This means that you should avoid strenuous activity if possible while recovering from an intense exercise session.

Having enough lean muscle mass is a very important goal to have. Not only does it make us look good, it is very beneficial for your health. For example, the more muscle mass you have, the more fat you will burn while you are resting.
