Some people get involved during their leisure time as a hobby while others as an exercise for health purposes and body fitness. Gymnastics in Delaware is a very developed and valued sport. The place has professional coaches who train gymnasts to high levels.

The origin of the term gymnastics is the Greek language. When translated in English the word means to exercise naked. In the old Greece culture, exercises that were practiced in gymnasiums went by this term. Gymnasiums were the places of practice where men practiced with no clothes on. Exercises in gymnasiums were later included in Olympic Games. Most of the exercises fall in different fields today.

As a sport, it requires a lot of physical strength, body balance, coordination, agility, power, and flexibility. Standards in gymnastics are set and enforced by an international body although every country has its own governing body with affiliations to the international authority. Even though there are different reasons and purposes for training in this sport, the most well known category is the artistic gymnastics.

This sport comprises training up to different levels. The lowest competitive level that has been sanctioned in the US is level 5. Lower levels except level 4 are viewed as being non-competitive and competitions are not held in such levels. Demonstration of a mastery of all skills in level 4 and the other lower levels is required before one proceeds to competitive levels. As such, gyms may hold competitions to test ability in kids in level 4. Level 4 simply familiarizes and prepares kids for competitions.

Both feminine and masculine events are included in artistic events. Feminine events include balance beams, floor exercise, uneven bars, and vault. On the contrary, masculine events comprise of high bar, vault, still rings, parallel bar, floor exercises, and pommel horse. The events may require individual participants or a team to accomplish. Others require both individual and team effort. The events are improvements of exercises done in Ancient Greece.

Gymnastic is comprised of many disciplines in which participants may participate. Trampolining, tumbling, team gym, and aerobatic, rhythmic, and acrobatic gymnastics are among the major disciplines available. The sport allows participants from different age groups with some being as young as 2 years. Difficulty increases with individual ability and age. The routines are physically exhausting although they take a short period of time. Participants are tested for endurance, strength, awareness of limits, and flexibility.

This sport has some disciplines that are only meant for female participants. For example, men are disallowed from participating in rhythmic events at competitive levels. Generally, participants are free what they want during performances. Individuals and team members choose exercises they want to execute although some are mandatory. During a performance individuals can execute any exercises of their own choice.

Previously, athletes were awarded scores out of 10. However, the score scheme has been changed and now participants can earn points without a limit. Points are earned basing on factors like completeness, difficulty, and accuracy.
