0 The Amigo Turnout Rug For Horses

By Marissa Velazquez

During the cold winter months many people need to purchase a thick warm blanket for their horse or pony. This is especially important for the breeds that do not grow a thick winter coat or for an animal that has recently been moved north. It takes several years for them to make the adjustment and in the mean time they will benefit from an Amigo turnout sheet or rug.

Horses must be turned out every day. Exercise is very important to keeping horses fit and well. It is also vital for their psychological well being. Horses are herd animals and really enjoy company. They should spend as much time as possible outside, nibbling on grass and stretching their legs. Even if they are not in regular work they need the daily exercise that time in the outdoors provides.

Owners that choose not to stable their animals in the winter will have to make arrangements to give them at least minimal shelter. Most people have run in sheds or field shelters where the horses can get out of the worst of the weather. These horses will also need a good thick blanket to keep them warm and dry. Rain is one of the worst things for horses. If they get soaked and the temperatures drop they can often suffer severe health problems.

Using a good turn out blanket will also save hours of grooming time. Horses that are ridden in the winter are often clipped to remove their heavy winter coat and prevent excessive sweating. They will need several blankets to compensate for their loss of coat. A good water proof outdoor rug is essential. There are many different thicknesses of blanket available.

Most of the new rugs are made from strong but light polyester. This makes them not only easy to use, but they repel water and dry quickly. They are treated with a combination of products that makes them truly wind and water proof. At the end of the winter they can be machine washed and line dried. Most people find they can get season after seasons use out of every rug.

Horses should be turned out to pasture every day. This allows them to stretch their legs, get some exercise and socialize with their friends. It is very bad for the animals, both physically and mentally to be cooped out for too long. However, owners that want to ride during the winter will spend hours getting their mount clean and free of dust. Putting on a turnout rug first will save hours of hard work.

Turn out and stable rugs are available from most retail horse stores. Many of these places have been in business for years and provide excellent service for their clients. Their staff are very helpful and can give customers advice on which is the best type of blanket for their needs. It is not worth buying a really thick one for a small pony who will stay quite warm on his own.

Some Amigo turnout rugs even have bold designs which makes the horse easy to spot in the herd. It can also help the stable staff match the correct rug to each horse and save them a lot of time.
